Arrêté par l’Armée communiste chinoise en 1959, Palden Gyatso, moine tibétain, a passé 33 ans en prison et dans des camps de travail pour « crime » de manifestation pacifique. Torturé, privé de nourriture et condamné aux travaux forcés, il a assisté à la destruction de sa nation et de sa culture; il a vu ses professeurs, ses amis et sa famille déplacés, emprisonnés ou tués. Malgré les atrocités dont il a été victime, il ne nourrit aucune haine à l’endroit des Chinois et croit que cela fait partie de son « karma ». Ce film nous révèle les contours d’une histoire inspirante : la survie d’un esprit et d’une âme à des épreuves d’une incroyable contrainte.

Arrested by the Chinese Communist Army in 1959, Palden Gyatso, a tibetain Monk spent 33 years in prisons and labour camps for the “crime” of peaceful demonstration. Tortured, starved and sentenced to hard labour, he watched his nation and culture destroyed, his teachers, friends and family displaced, jailed or killed. Despite the atrocities that befell him, he harbours no anger toward the Chinese, and believes it is part of his ‘karma.’ This film reveals the contours of an inspirational story: It is the survival of a mind and soul under unthinkable duress.

Makoto Sasa

Makoto Sasa a étudié en communications des médias à l’Université de Keio, au Japon et de la New School University de New York où elle vit depuis 1998. Elle a réalisé plusieurs courts métrages documentaires et a travaillé comme assistante-monteuse sur des longs métrages 35 mm. : Going Under et Love. Elle a été monteuse et adjointe à la production d’un long métrage documentaire sur un photographe japonais. Ce film a d’ailleurs reçu le prix pour le meilleur montage au Festival international de films d’Honolulu et le prix du public au Festival international de films de Brooklyn.

Makoto Sasa studied Media at Keio University in Japan, and at the New School University in New York City where she moved in 1998. She has made several short documentaries, worked as assistant editor for the 35 mm features Going Under and Love. She was the editor and associate producer for a feature documentary about a Japanese photographer that won the Best Editing Award at the Honolulu International Film Festival, and the Audience Award at the Brooklyn International Film Festival.
