Israéliens et Palestiniens, juifs, chrétiens et musulmans, ils sont avant tout musiciens. Partant du constat qu’il est maintenant impossible pour eux de se rencontrer en Israël ou dans les Territoires palestiniens, Jean-Yves Labat de Rossi, vieux routard de la musique, va les chercher chez eux, de part et d’autre du mur, pour les inviter à une tournée surprenante qui les réunira en France pendant trois semaines. Un pari audacieux qui se révèle rapidement risqué. Dès le début de la tournée, les rivalités apparaissent inévitablement. Sur scène, c’est un triomphe alors que dans les coulisses, le ton monte. Mais cette promiscuité à laquelle ils ne peuvent échapper les contraint, malgré tout, à communiquer. L’exaspération liée à la fatigue de la tournée et aux antagonismes politiques se transforme progressivement en liens qui se tissent et dont la musique est le fil de trame.

Israelis and Palestinians, Jews, Christians and Muslims: they are first and foremost musicians. Knowing that it was impossible for them to meet in Israel or Palestinian territory, long-time music vagabond Jean-Yves Labat de Rossi visited these musicians in their home towns on both sides of the wall. He invited them to join an extraordinary tour – one that would unite them in France for three weeks. It was an audacious gamble that soon became fraught with hazards. Right from the start of the tour, rivalries inevitably arose. On stage it was a total triumph, whereas tempers flared backstage. But this inescapable proximity forced them, in spite of everything, to communicate. The stresses arising from an exhausting tour and political rivalries slowly developed into close ties, sustained and driven by the music.

Xavier de Lauzanne

Né en région parisienne en 1970, Xavier de Lauzanne a suivi des études d’hôtellerie avant de mettre en place des formations hôtelières pour jeunes issus de milieux défavorisés en Martinique, au Vietnam puis au Cambodge. Passionné par l’image, il s’achète sa première caméra numérique en 1999 pour tourner au Vietnam, pendant un an, un essai documentaire Hanoi entre deux 14 juillets sur le parcours d’un cyclopousse lors du changement de siècle. C’est en rencontrant les fondateurs de l’association « Pour un sourire d’enfant » au Cambodge, pour lesquels il tourne leur film de communication, qu’il se forme concrètement à la réalisation. Avec sa société, Aloest Productions, il a produit et réalisé une quinzaine de films documentaires, dont certains sont primés en France et à l’étranger. Parmi ses films, citons Hanoi entre deux 14 juillets, Pour un sourire d’enfant, Retour sur la RC4, L’espérance parrainée. Il prépare actuellement un autre documentaire, Enfants valises.

Born in the Paris area in 1970, Xavier de Lauzanne first studied hotel management before setting up hotel business training for disadvantaged youth in Martinique, Vietnam and then Cambodia. Having a strong passion for images, he bought his first digital camera in 1999 to film a documentary essay for a year in Vietnam, “Hanoi Between Two July 14ths,” about a bicycle taxi during the turn of the century. When he met the founders of the “For a Child’s Smile” association in Cambodia while shooting their publicity film, he gained solid training as a director. In 2000 he directed his first documentary in Vietnam called “Return to RC4,” about the former French and Vietnamese soldiers of the Vietnam war. In order to obtain financing for editing the film, he and his childhood friend François-Hugues de Vaumas formed their own production company Aloest Productions. Deeply moved by the people he had met in humanitarian work, Xavier became a professional director of documentaries that, for the most part, portray humanity’s position in contemporary societies. Among his films are: Hanoi Between Two July 14ths, For a Child’s Smile, Return to RC4. He is currently working on another documentary, New French.
