Trente ans après leur arrivée au Canada, un groupe de Chiliens ont créé le festival Victor Jara « Pour le droit de vivre en paix », qui rend hommage à l'artiste compositeur Victor Jara, torturé et assassiné quelques jours après le Coup d'état du 11 septembre 1973. Plus de 74 artistes de différentes disciplines artistiques et d'origines ethniques diverses ont été impliqués, unis autour d'un message commun : la paix. Tout en laissant la scène aux artistes, les protagonistes nous font connaître leur source d'inspiration et leur décision de promouvoir le message de paix de Victor Jara que l'on découvre à travers des images d'archives.
Thirty years after emigrating to Canada, a group of Chileans founded the Victor Jara Festival (“Pour le droit de vivre en paix”) as a tribute to singer-songwriter Victor Jara, tortured and assassinated a few days after the September 11, 1973, coup d'état. Over 74 artists of various backgrounds and artistic disciplines were involved in the project, united around a message of peace. While music takes centre stage in the film, the participants are given a chance to talk about what inspires them and why they decided to promote Victor Jara's message of peace. We get to know the man himself through archival images.
Claudia Valdivia :
Claudia Valdivia est née à Viña del Mar, au Chili. En 1974, elle a émigré avec sa famille à Montréal où elle a étudié en cinéma et en photographie à l'université Concordia. L'exil, l'intégration, le passé, la violence et la paix sont des thèmes qu'elle aborde dans ses œuvres. La violence organisée au Chili lui tient particulièrement à cœur, car elle constitue un pan de l'histoire chilienne moderne, tantôt niée par les partisans de Pinochet, tantôt considérée comme tabou par beaucoup de ceux qui l'ont vécue. À la mémoire de Victor est son premier documentaire.
Claudia Valdivia was born in Viña del Mar, Chile. In 1974, she and her family emigrated to Montréal, where she studied film and photography at Concordia University. Among the themes she touches on in her work are exile, integration, the past, violence and peace. She is particularly interested in organized violence in Chile, as it forms a chapter in modern Chilean history that is sometimes denied by Pinochet's supporters, sometimes considered taboo by those who lived through it. This is her first documentary.
