En 1545, les conquérants espagnols découvrirent des gisements d'argent pur dans une montagne de la région Inca de Kollasuyo, aujourd'hui connue comme l'Altiplano Bolivien. Ils donnèrent à cette montagne le nom de Cerro Rico (Montagne Riche) et à la prospère et puissante ville qui se créa à ses pieds, Potosí. Ils créèrent alors la plus grande industrie minière de l'époque alimentée par un cruel système de travaux forcés. Aujourd'hui, le Cerro Rico de Potosí est géré par plus de quarante cinq coopératives de mineurs qui travaillent toujours dans des conditions déplorables, similaires à celles de leurs ancêtres. El Tío , le Seigneur-Démon de la mine, est le véritable propriétaire des filons d'argent et les mineurs lui rendent adoration pour obtenir ses faveurs. En échange, les hommes sacrifient leurs poumons dans l'obscur labyrinthe des tunnels de la montagne.
In 1545 Spanish conquerors discovered pure silver in a mountain in the Inca region of Kollasuyo, today's Bolivian Altiplano. They named this mountain Cerro Rico ( Rich Mountain ) and the prosperous and powerful city born at its base, Potosí. Soon they created the biggest mining industry in its time, sustained by a merciless forced labour system. After more than four centuries of operation the Cerro Rico of Potosí continues to offer silver, zinc and lead to forty-five cooperatives of miners, who work under dreadful conditions similar to those of their ancestors. El Tío , the Lord Demon of the mine, is the true owner of its veins, and the miners worship him to win his favour. In exchange, the men must sacrifice their lungs in the obscure maze of the mountain tunnels.

Juan S. Betancor :
Juan S. Betancor est né en 1973 à Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, aux Îles Canaries d'Espagne. Il est titulaire d'un diplôme en beaux-arts avec spécialisation en cinéma et télévision de la Tisch School of the Arts de l'Université de New York (1996). Son film de fin d'études, The Incredible Story of the Man Who Became A Statue , est lauréat du prix du meilleur film en 16 mm du Festival international du cinéma indépendant d'Elche. Enfants de la montagne d'argent est son premier documentaire.
Juan S. Betancor was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain, in 1973. He studied at New York University 's Tisch School of the Arts, obtaining a B.F.A. in Film and TV in 1996. His thesis film, "The Incredible Story of the Man Who Became a Statue" won the Best 16 mm Film Award in the Elche International Film Festival. Hijos de la Montaña de Plata is his first documentary film.
