Bulgarie, 1984. Le processus de « régénération » du pays voit les immigrants Turcs forcés d’abandonner leurs noms ethniques pour des noms chrétiens. Ivan est responsable officiel des sceaux pour les nouveaux documents d’identité. Ayten est convaincu qu’en volant les sceaux, elle ralentira le « génocide ». Au cours d’une opération policière brutale, l’enfant d’Ayten est tué et celle-ci est faite prisonnière. Ivan, témoin et joueur de l’événement, est sous le choc. On l’enferme pour tenter d’« effacer » l’événement de sa mémoire. Le hasard veut qu’Ayten soit internée dans le même hôpital que lui. Leurs destins se croisent sur le chemin du dernier espoir, celui de la mort. Contre toute attente, ils vaincront graduellement leur animosité pour accepter leurs différences et se rapprocher. Leur entourage acceptera-t-il ce choix?
Ivan, a Bulgarian man, gets caught up in the so-called "regeneration process", when ethnic Turks' names were forcibly changed to Bulgarian ones. The Turkish schoolteacher Ayten tries to steal the seals, thinking that this way she can slow down the ethnic genocide. Ayten's small child is killed during an action by the special forces of that period. Ivan, who's been among the main participants in this action, is paralysed with shock. The security forces decide to "erase" his memory. Ayten is also put in isolation in the same hospital. From death, which is the only choice left to each of them, comes the common path of Ivan and Ayten… They gradually overcome their animosity, accept their differences and are attracted to each other. But will the people around them accept their choice?

Radoslav Spassov
Né en 1943 en Bulgarie, Radoslav Spassov gagne de l'expérience aux studios de cinéma Boyana, à Sofia, avant de sortir diplômé de la VGIK de Moscou. De retour en Bulgarie, il travaille pour de nombreux cinéastes bulgares et remporte des prix dans des festivals locaux ou dans le circuit international, notamment à Karlovy Vary et Locarno. Il réalise A Day of Forgiveness, son premier long métrage de fiction, en 1993.
Bulgarian cinematographer and director Radoslav Spassov was born in 1943. He graduated from VGIK (Moscow) in 1971, with a degree in cinematography. One of Bulgaria’s most distinguished cinematographers, he’s shot more than 20 films, working with some of Bulgaria’s best directors – such as Georgi Djulgerov, Eduard Sachariev, Georgi Stoyanov, Kiran Kolarov, Rangel Valchanov and Ludmil Staykov. He debuted as a director in 1993, with A Day of Forgiveness.
