Le fleuve Biobío, l’un des plus longs cours d’eau du Chili, prend sa source dans les Andes et se déverse dans l’Océan pacifique et revêt une importance écologique profonde. Sous l’occupation espagnole, le fleuve servait de frontière naturelle avec les peuples autochtones. En 2004, la multinationale Endesa y inaugurait le Ralco, le troisième plus grand barrage au monde, après avoir encouru des problèmes majeurs avec le peuple pehuenche-mapuche qui a dû assister, impuissant, à l’inondation de ses terres ancestrales.

The biobio is one of the longest river in Chile. Its source is in the Andes and it flows into the Pacific Ocean. It is of great ecological importance as well as both politically and historically important because the Biobio was the natural frontier during the Spanish occupation. The third biggest dam in the world, Ralco, in the Biobio river, has just been inaugurated in 2004 after running into a major trouble with the pehuenche-mapuche indigenous people. The ancestral land of pehuenches has been flooded by Endesa, the transnational Spanish company.
