2008 Edition

The 3rd Montreal Human Rights Film Festival (MHRFF) presented the 2008 awards during the closing ceremony which took place on Thursday April 3, 2008 at the Cinéma du Parc. From March 27 to April 3, 2008, 60 films (documentaries, animated and fiction), from 21 countries were shown in two venues: Cinéma du Parc and NFB Cinéma.

The 2008 Audience Choice Award presented by Amnesty international French-Canadian section, was attributed to the Lebanese filmmaker Philippe Aractingi for his feature film Under the Bombs and The MHRFF Documentary Grand Prize was presented by the Conférence régionale des élus de Montréal (CRÉ) to Annika Gustafson for her film Killing Time. A Special Jury Mention was attributed to the documentary film A Lesson of Belorussian, by Miroslaw Dembinski. The MHRFF Quebec Prize for Committed Documentary presented by the La Fondation de la tolerance went to Yves Langlois for his film Le Dernier envol (The Last Flight)

Initiated in 2006 by Images interculturelles within the Action Week Against Racism, the Montréal Human Rights Film Festival (MHFF) aims to create, through film, a space for discussion and reflection on issues related to human rights and freedoms. The MHRFF also wants to pay tribute to the makers of a high quality art form committed to human rights and not necessarily distributed commercially. The Festival also wishes to spotlight the works of young directors and to encourage productions - still too rare of films dedicated to various aspects of human rights.

Generally speaking, the selected films offer a critical perspective on past and current crises and human tragedies unknown to the public. These films also celebrate the great and small gestures of solidarity and invites the audience to continue its actions for peace, justice and human rights.

The MHRFF is part of the Human Rights Film Network (HRFN), an international network working on preserving and developping life on the planet.

We only hope to share with you the multiple perspectives of human rights.
